The Artists and Story Behind Lincoln City’s Glass Floats on the Beach

Once you’ve booked a beach home rental Lincoln City will be waiting for you to discover its unique tradition centered around blown glass on the Central Oregon coast. Each year volunteers hide 3,000 glass floats along Lincoln City’s seven miles of coastline between mid-October and Memorial Day, and the public are invited to take part in the hunt. But how did this tradition start, and who are the artists that make it happen?

A 21st Century Tradition

Visitors who walked the beaches of Lincoln City, Oregon in the early 20th century often found glass floats that Japanese fishing vessels left behind after releasing their nets in the waters miles away. These little treasures were highly collectible and continued to increase in value as fishing crews the world over adopted buoyant plastic to cast out their nets. Though the last Japanese-made glass floats disappeared from the Oregon coast long ago, a new era of glass floats on the beach would begin as the 20th century drew to a close. A local artist came up with the idea in 1997 as a way to celebrate the upcoming millennium, and the city inaugurated the Finders Keepers project in 1999. By Memorial Day of 2000, the first season of Finders Keepers had attracted thousands of visitors from around the country who were intrigued by this unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while appreciating art.

Since the inaugural season, local artists have produced more than 3,000 glass floats and other works of blown glass art every year, with numbered floats corresponding to the current year. This year there will be 2016 official glass floats that lucky beachcombers can find and register to receive a Certificate of Authenticity. With some of the best vacation rentals Oregon has to offer, though, you and your loved ones are sure to remember your Finders Keepers season whether you find a float or not.

The 2016/2017 Glass Artists

Lincoln City has a reputation for its glass floats and other forms of blown glass art, thanks in no small part to the tradition of Finders Keepers on the beach and the stable of local artists who keep this tradition afloat. The artists responsible for this year’s glass floats include Treasure Collupy from Lincoln City’s Alder House Glassblowing, Ryan Bledsoe and Amanda Williams from Newport’s The Edge Art Gallery, Claude Kurtz from Astoria’s Fernhill Glass, Brett Flanigan from Lincoln City’s Flanigans Glass Gallery, Keith Gabor from Ashland’s Gathering Glass Studio, Paris Birdwell from Otis’ Glass Oasis, Mark and Marcus Ellinger from Stanwood’s Glass Quest, William Murphy from Newport’s Oregon Coast Glassworks and several artists from Lincoln City’s Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio including Kelly Howard, Jon Meyers, Daniel Millen and James Benson.

Several Lincoln City artists will contribute other colorful works of glass art in the form of coins, crabs, sand dollars, sea stars, shells and other nautical subjects. Make sure to stop by Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio to see glass art by Kelly Howard, Jon Meyers, Daniel Millen and James Benson; Mor Art for blown glass by Dan Watts and Maurice Martinez; and Glass Confusion for glass art by Marcia Glenn.

Whether you’re looking for a large family home to rent or a snug condo rental Lincoln City is ready to accommodate you and your loved ones this Finders Keepers season. With so many amazing artists sharing their work with the world, you’re sure to leave with something special by the time your Oregon holiday is through.

Don’t Miss Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers Season Finale this May 28-30!

From its stunning coastline to its world-class cuisine and beach home rentals Lincoln City is known for many things. This seaside town along the Central Oregon Coast may be most famous, however, for the glass floats that are “dropped” on the beach during Finders Keepers season each year from mid-October through Memorial Day. During this time beachcombers can search for their own unique piece of glass art anywhere along Lincoln City’s seven-mile stretch of coastline from Siletz Bay to Roads End. And now the season is coming to an end! If you want your chance to find a glass float on the beach this year you’d better plan on attending the Finders Keepers Season Finale this May 28-30 in Lincoln City. Once you book your beach vacation rentals Oregon and its beautiful central coastline will do the rest.

All You Need to Know about Glass Floats on the Beach

These hand-crafted glass artworks are modelled after the blue and green glass floats once used by Japanese fishing boats to cast out their nets, which were often found washed up on the shores of Oregon beaches. Fishing boats nowadays use much less fanciful plastic floats to cast out their nets, but artists in Lincoln City have been celebrating the art of blown glass floats for nearly 20 years. Finders Keepers was concocted in 1997 to celebrate the upcoming new millennium, and artists spent two years preparing for the inaugural season with thousands of brightly colored glass floats that were each numbered and signed. The months-long event was so successful, and attracted so many visitors from around the nation, that it became an annual occasion long after the turning point of the millennium had come and gone.

How to Participate in the Finders Keepers Season Finale

If you want to participate in the final search for glass art on the beach, you’ll have the best luck between the 28thand 30th of May, when the last batch of numbered glass floats will be placed by volunteer “float faeries” who work diligently to distribute the floats in secret. A total of 3,000 glass floats are dropped each season, but the number of official floats always corresponds with the year, so this year 2,016 numbered artworks are up for grabs.  Just remember to follow these simple rules to keep your search fun and safe:

·      Only search for floats below the embankment and above the high tide line.

·      Set out from public beach access points.

·      Search any time during daylight hours as floats are “dropped” throughout the day.

·      Never search for floats after daylight hours (float faeries don’t do drops after dark).

·      Do not search for glass floats in unsafe weather conditions.

·      Keep your eye out for other kinds of glass art such as sea stars, shells, crabs, coins, and sand dollars that are placed on the beach during special drops.

·      If you find a numbered glass float call (800) 452-2151 to register it and receive a Certificate of Authenticity as well as information about the artist!

·      If you don’t find a glass float on the beach, don’t worry! You can purchase floats and other unique pieces of glass art from participating local artisans such as Alderhouse Glassblowing, Fernhill Glass, Flanigans Glass Gallery, Gathering Glass Studio, Glass Oasis, Glass Quest Studio, Lincoln City Glass Center, Mor Art, and Ocean Beaches Glassblowing and Gallery.

Don’t delay in booking the kind of vacation homes and condo rentals Lincoln City is known for, so you and your loved ones can enjoy the glass floats that truly put this town on the map!

History of the “Finders Keepers” Project

The “Finders Keepers” project dates back to nearly two decades ago in 1997. An artist living and working in the Lincoln City area was inspired by the impending new millennium, and wanted to find a way to celebrate and welcome this new era. The city agreed to sponsor the project and its first season took place between the early fall of 1999 and the late spring of 2000. Numerous volunteers known as “Float Fairies” joined in to make the drops. Not only was this a way to mark the new millennium, but it also drew thousands of tourists from neighboring areas and across the nation. Everyone wanted to find their own signed and numbered glass float decorated with dazzling colors and designs, and many others visited local galleries throughout Lincoln City to purchase glass floats available for sale unnumbered. To this day, visitors still flock to this area every year between mid-October and Memorial Day to find and bring home their own float.

Where and How to Find Your Own Glass Float

During each glass drop, these unique pieces of hand-crafted art are dropped by “Float Fairies” along a 7½-mile stretch of publicly accessible coastline spanning from the Roads End Area in Lincoln City to Siletz Bay. The total number of glass floats dropped during a season always reflects the year, so this year 2,016 floats will be dropped, including 300 for the Spring Break event at the end of March. You will find the glass floats below the embankment of the beach and above the tidal line. Be careful to keep your eye on the ocean at all times, and never search during storms, as the fairies do not drop glass floats when the weather is frightful.

After booking your beach vacation rentals, Lincoln City will be yours to explore. Whether you find a signed and numbered glass float, purchase an unnumbered one, or simply enjoy the Central Oregon Coast and everything it has to offer, you’ll return home as a winner.
