Lincoln City’s Coastal Air Quality Offers Guests a Place to Breathe

While the air quality throughout much of Oregon remains unhealthy, the team at A1 Beach Rentals is pleased to report breathable air in and around our beach house rentals. Lincoln City, Oregon is currently experiencing air quality considered “moderate” to “good” with the Air Quality Index (AQI) forecast predicting an AQI as low as 17 in the coming days. To put things in perspective, many localities throughout the state of Oregon have recently experienced air quality readings between 300-500 on the AQI scale and remain dangerously smokey. Thanks to the onshore flow returning to the coast, one of the best places to be in Oregon is one of A1’s beach vacation rentals. Lincoln City is truly offering local Oregonians a place to breathe.

Lincoln City Becomes the Place to Escape the Smoke

Many evacuees that came to Lincoln City to flee the fires in nearby towns including Otis and Rose Lodge have found that the air quality here is making it possible to rest, relax, and even enjoy some outdoor activities without discomfort or health concerns. There are still concerns about the Echo Mountain Complex Fires in Lincoln County, but firefighters have been able to maintain the fire line from spreading further and evacuation orders have either been lifted or downgraded throughout Lincoln City. It’s now possible for locals to go for walks, visit the beach, and enjoy local cuisine. Authorities are still encouraging non-locals to wait until the fires are contained to vacation in Lincoln City, but with weather cooling down and precipitation on the way, it’s safe to say visitors can once again book a stay here within the coming weeks.

Lincoln City Beaches Will Provide a Respite this Fall

September 22 will bring a season of cooler weather and all the fun of autumn, making it a great time to get away from it all in one of A1’s coastal homes or beach condo rentals. Lincoln City is expected to have better air quality than much of Oregon for weeks to come, and the 7½ miles of beaches with plenty of room to spread out and walk around continue to make it one of the safest places for a vacation or long weekend.

If you’re considering planning a trip to Lincoln City in the future, contact A1 Beach Rentals today to see what options are available. This stretch of the Oregon coast is bound to be a breath of fresh air.

Lincoln City Offers Bird Watchers a Tranquil Environment to Explore

Birding is a growing pastime that brings more visitors each year to Lincoln City’s beach house rentals. Lincoln City, Oregon is an excellent place for birders to explore bays, lakes, meadows, forests, and trails for species ranging from Bald Eagles to Blue Herons to Sandpipers and so much in between. Your first step is to book one A1’s comfortable beach vacation rentals. Lincoln City weather changes noticeably from season to season, so you’ll want to check that the conditions will be like before your arrival. Then pack a sturdy pair of boots, gloves, an all-weather jacket, sunscreen, and, of course, binoculars. If you’re lucky you might see most of the 13 following species, but whatever you do, leave the local habitat as you left it and always observe any signage in nesting areas. Happy bird watching

Lincoln City, Oregon is an excellent place for birders to explore bays, lakes, meadows, forests, and trails for species ranging from Bald Eagles to Blue Herons to Sandpipers.

Lincoln City and County’s Majestic Bird Species

Bald Eagle: Look for bald eagles in the trees near Devil’s Lake and Siletz Bay. Thankfully, these beautiful birds were removed from the endangered species list in 2007!

Brown Pelican: The endangered brown pelicans, which are known for their dark color and ability to plunge into the water to catch food, can be seen spring-fall on Siletz Bay and the ocean.

Bufflehead: These black-and-white ducks with purple-green throats can be seen diving deep into the water to find plants and fish to feed around Siletz Bay and on Devil’s Lack.

Dusky Canada Goose: During the winter you may spot these migrating Canadian geese with brown bodies, long black necks, and black “caps” near Salishan Spa & Golf Resort.

Great Blue Heron: If you’re around Siletz Bay you may sneak a peek of one of these big, blue-grey birds with long legs perfect for hanging out in saltwater and spotting their prey.

Great White Egret: These formidable herons with black legs and orange bills are also often found around Siletz Bay’s calm, salt waters.

Osprey: The odds are good that you’ll see an Osprey if you book one of our beach condo rentals. Lincoln City is home to many of these hawks with brown wings and white bellies spotted around Devil’s Lake, Siletz Bay, Siletz River, and more areas south of the city.

Pelagic Cormorant: You can spot these birds any time of year. They inhabit a large, local colony 10 miles south of Lincoln City at Cape Foulweather.

Tufted Puffin: These puffins are difficult to spot, as they spend winters at sea and nest on rocks near the coast. Your best bet is visiting Newport’s Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Western Gull: Like the Pelagic Cormorant, the Oregon Coast’s largest permanent population of the Western Gull is found in and around Lincoln City. Just watch out, as they love to scavenge.

Western Sandpiper: The odds are also good that you’ll see this bird with a slim, dark bill and dark legs while visiting Lincoln City. They are Oregon’s Coast most common migrating shorebird.

Western Snowy Plover: These shorebirds can be spotted nesting around the dry mudflats and expansive, sandy beaches of the Central and Southern Oregon Coast.

Wood Duck: If you’re taking a stroll around Devil’s Lake you may notice these colorful, striking ducks. You might even spot the “nest boxes” that people have installed for them.

Whether you’re an avid birder, or just thinking of trying bird watching for the first time, Lincoln City is a great place to spend a few days enjoying nature. You’ll also find many other fascinating types of wildlife and marine life as you explore the shores and inland areas. This cozy spot on SW Anchor Ave is one of our most popular beach condo rentals for couples. The Anchor is technically the master suite to a larger property known as The Submarine, but it is completely private with its own entrance and nobody on either side of you, above you, or below you. After walking in from the second-floor entrance just off the street, one of the first things you’ll notice is the deck overlooking the beach. Draw the curtains and see the deck with its fabulous view of the ocean through sliding glass doors. You’ll also find this property’s best feature on the deck: a glass-enclosed private hot tub overlooking the beach and ocean. The Anchor also comes with a kitchenette, sofa, and fireplace. The beach is also just a short stroll away, where you’ll find plenty of space to walk on the sand and abundant tide pools to explore during low tide. This stretch of beach is also home to the famous Nelscott wave, which is only ¼-mile offshore and famed for annual surf competitions such as the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic that takes place between the start of October and the end of March.

The Porthole

The Porthole is one of our finest beach vacation rentals for larger groups, as it can accommodate as many as 10 people including guests and visitors. This completely furnished home a quiet, dead-end road that features an ocean view and a hot tub. As many as 10 people can sleep on three queen beds and four twin beds, and guests with mobility issues will appreciate that there are no stairs into the house from the parking like some other beachfront properties. You can cook gourmet meals in the fully stocked kitchen and adjoining dining area, which opens up to a private patio that is full of surprises. Open the doors and find a hot tub, picnic table, and charming yard all with stunning views of the ocean. There are more wonderful views from the picture windows in the living room, where you’ll also find a floor-to-ceiling river rock fireplace, vaulted ceiling, open beams, and a big-screen TV to keep everyone entertained. The Beach is the Always the Biggest Draw

The Starry Night offers views of the white water and sandy beaches only 200 yards away at the Roads End State Park. This state park features a nearly hidden cove just north of Lincoln City with space for strolling, views of rocky islands, fascinating tidepools, and access to the headland. With smaller crowds and less wind compared to beaches in the center of town, this is truly a hidden gem in the Lincoln City area. Just make sure to head back from the lowest cove area before the end of low tide so you don’t get stuck for a few hours! The rustic and concealed nature of Roads End is all part of this beach’s charm, though.

A Bed for Every Beach Lover – and Much More

This expansive coastal estate offers much more than easy access to the beach. As many as three cars can park at the property and even the entrance and front door are inviting for guests upon arrival. From there, visitors walk into the main floor featuring a living room and fully stocked, gourmet kitchen with a dining table that seats 10 in addition to a pub table with two chairs and three stools at the kitchen island. The upper level features four stunning bedrooms including one king bedroom with a full bathroom and jetted tub, another king bedroom with a shower in the bathroom, a queen bedroom with a shower in the bathroom, and an additional suite with three twin bunks. A total of four bathrooms are found on the upper level, as well as a washer and dryer. A convenient half bath is found downstairs near the living room that features a gas fireplace and sleeper sofa for additional guests. But that’s not all. Wi-Fi is available throughout and the living room is equipped with multiple televisions featuring HDTV and a DVD player, while the game room features air hockey, ping pong, and a pool table. The deck featuring a hot tub with ocean views is like the icing on the cake.

A Final Note on Ensuring the Safety of Every Guest We’ve always been serious about cleaning, but A1 Beach Rentals is working harder than ever to make sure our properties are clean and sanitary. You can rest assured that your rental is spotless whether you book one of our cozy beach condo rentals or one of our larger estates like The Starry Night. We make sure every surface is sanitized and all linens are replaced, and we strive to exceed the CDC’s COVID-19 guidelines. It’s also important to note that Roads Ends State Park is asking visitors not to travel from too far away to enjoy the beach, to turn around if the beaches seem too crowded, and – as always – to pack out all trash that is brought into the park. If we all do our bit, we can enjoy the beaches, leave them as we left them, and keep each other safe. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Agates: Semiprecious Stones from the Sea

Semiprecious stones include such natural wonders such as amber, aquamarine, emerald, jade, onyx, opal, pearl, topaz, turquoise, and many others. While most semiprecious stones are formed on land, others – such as pearls – are formed in the sea. Agates are unique because they are formed on land within holes inside volcanic rocks (similar to moganite and quartz), but because they form near the sea, they are first released into the water from nearby crumbling rocks. Then it’s only a matter of time until they wash up onto the shores of Oregon and Northern California. While most agates aren’t worth a whole lot of money, they are stunning to look at and can be used to make unique pieces of jewelry and other beautiful creations. It’s also just a whole lot of fun to hunt for them!

Not All Beaches Are Equal for Agate Hunters

Lincoln City has long been known as one of the best places on the Oregon Coast to hunt for agates, coral, and jasper. Even the experts at Oregon State University agree. With lodging options ranging from cozy beach condo rentals to vacation homes that sleep 16 people, your whole crew will also be accommodated in Lincoln City. If you’re looking to visit a few areas in your search for agates, Lincoln City is also a great place to start. Your best bet is to head south and stop at Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach (which are also known for fossilized mollusk and clamshells) before continuing on to Depoe Bay and Newport. Depoe Bay is a particularly good place for a day trip, as it is also known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast.” But you don’t need to leave Lincoln City and its 7½ miles of pristine beaches to see all sorts of sea creatures and find all sorts of sea treasures that have washed ashore. You could spend days just exploring this particular stretch of coastline. Lincoln City’s intertidal zones, where tide pools thrive, are also particularly wondrous around Roads End State Park in the north side of town. While there are still plenty of bookings available, it’s a good idea to act fast if you want to get your perfect beach house rental in Lincoln City this summer. The secret will soon be out that this is one of the best places to get away from it all on the Oregon Coast. Whether you’re most looking forward to hunting for agates, exploring the tidepools, or just enjoying a cool beverage from a hot tub with ocean views on the deck of your rental, A1 Beach Rentals has got you covered. June Brings Good News for Oregon Beachgoers

The beaches officially reopened in Lincoln City in May and lodging was able to resume as of June 1, making it possible for visitors to return to our vacation homes and beach condo rentals. Lincoln City not only saw beaches reopen during this phase, but many parks and recreation areas reopened as well. Restaurants, bars, and retail outlets are also able to welcome diners, drinkers, and shoppers once again with new guidelines in place. The reopening guidelines for such businesses include spacing tables 6 feet apart, limiting the number of people inside at a time, and requiring employees to wear face masks. These added precautions should ensure a safe, healthy, and fun summer for locals and visitors alike on the Oregon coast.

New Lodging Protocols to Ensure Your Health & Safety

New sanitation and social distancing protocols were put in place when lodging and other businesses were allowed to reopen in June, and we are committed to meeting and exceeding these guidelines. Rooms are to be left empty for 24 hours between visitors, and vacation rentals are to be meticulously cleaned and sanitized before a new guest arrives. The cleaning staff is wearing masks and gloves, sanitizing all surfaces with CDC/ EPA approved disinfectants, washing linens with approved disinfectants at recommended temperatures, and replacing all unused linen and terry before a new guest arrives. Lincoln City’s Native American History

The Oregon Coast was originally home to many tribes that are now part of the 27-member Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians along with other Native American tribes and bands that once lived between Northern California and southwest Washington. When the Coast (Siletz) Reservation was established in 1855, it included part of modern-day Lincoln City. These 27 tribes spoke numerous languages, including the Clatsop dialect of Chinook, Coos, Shasta, Siuslaw, Takelma, Tillamook, and many others. Some of these names might be familiar if you live in the Pacific Northwest or have ever visited our Oregon beach house rentals. Lincoln City locals and visitors should also recognize the name of Siletz Bay.

The Communities Before Lincoln City’s Incorporation

Lincoln City did not exist until 1965 when the unincorporated communities of Delake, Oceanlake, and Taft joined with the nearby towns of Cutler City and Nelscott, all of which were nestled around Lincoln City’s current main street (Highway 101). Homesteaders began arriving in the area as early as the 1880s, though, and Taft (named after our 27th President, William H. Taft) established its post office in 1906. Delake was founded some years after and established its post office in 1924, only to be reestablished as Oceanlake Post Office in 1927. The odd-sounding name of Delake is meant to mimic local Finnish community members’ pronunciation of nearby Devil’s Lake. The former town of Nelscott also had a unique name, which was a combination of the founders’ surnames, Nelson and Scott. The Nelscott Reef is still famed as one of the best spots to surf along the Pacific Coast. Cutler City, which was located on the east shore of Siletz Bay, was the biggest established town in the area that later became Lincoln City. Mr. and Mrs. George Cutler of Dallas founded the community in the early 20th century, supposedly after Chief Charles “Charley” DePoe of the Siletz Tribe sold the property to George Cutler. The town established a post office in 1930 that served the community until Lincoln City was formed.

The Modern History of Lincoln City, Oregon

Each of these historic communities had its own annual events and local culture, and there was even some competition among them for tourists and trade. They all needed local services such as police and firefighters, though, and while it seemed to make sense to combine and pool these resources, many people did not want to give up their local post office and unique heritage. That’s why they needed to come up with a new, unifying name when the towns and communities did finally incorporate, rather than using any of the five existing names. They held a contest to choose one and school children submitted the name of Lincoln City. It seemed like the best choice when the city was incorporated on March 3, 1965.

History of Glass Floats on the Beach

You probably know about Glass Floats on the Beach if you’ve ever stayed in one of our vacation homes or beach condo rentals. Lincoln City has not only been a hotspot for beaches, but also for arts and crafts such as glassblowing, since the 20th century. When that century was drawing to a close, a local artist decided to use this medium to celebrate the coming millennium with a nod to the Oregon Coast’s past. Japanese fishing boats of bygone eras once used beautiful blue and green glass fishing floats that often washed up on the shores of the Oregon Coast, and visitors in those eras used to love hunting for the glass treasures that would wash ashore. Eventually, they were all found … until 1999, that is, when Lincoln City sponsored the Finders Keepers project where local artists produced stunning blown-glass floats that were “hidden” around the beach. It was so popular and attracted so many tourists that it became part of the city’s local traditions. The beaches will be a great reason to visit Lincoln City once they reopen, and we look forward to welcoming you to our beach house rentals! Until then, this area’s fascinating history is worth learning more about. It’s easy to see why so many people wanted to live in this beautiful part of the Central Oregon Coast.

Top Eight Hiking Trails in and Around Lincoln City, Oregon

The team at A1 Beach Rentals looks forward to welcoming you to our beach house rentals again once we’re on the other side of this. The truth is, we all need a few things to look forward to in the not-so-distant future. Hiking and beachcombing on the Oregon Coast are two great activities to look forward to because they are out in the open air where you can still socially distance while enjoying nature. Beaches and hiking trails throughout the Central Oregon Coast might be closed right now, but once they are reopened, we can all look forward to a long walk in a beautiful setting. In addition to the 7½ miles of pristine coastline (which is within walking distance from most of our beach condo rentals and vacation homes), there are also numerous hiking trails in and around Lincoln City, Oregon. Here are eight of the top hiking destinations in and around Lincoln City that are worth exploring once the trails reopen:

Dear Honored Guests –
We look forward to being on the other side of this and hosting you at our Oregon beach homes or condos!

1. Agnes Creek Open Space Loop. This moderately easy, 1.7-mile trail takes less than an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. The loop stretches through a serene forest setting and allows dogs as long as they are on a leash.

2. Alder Island Nature Trail. You can find this trail right within Lincoln City. The easy, 0.9-mile trail winds past Siletz Bay and can be completed in about 20 minutes plus the time it talks to walk from one of our beach vacation rentals. Oregon walkers of all ability levels can enjoy this trail.

3. Cutler Wetlands Open Space Loop. The Cuter Wetlands Open Space features an easy, breezy 0.6-mile trail that is great for bird-watching or just enjoying a quick walk through nature in a forest setting. The walk can be completed in approximately 15 minutes.

4. Devils Lake Boardwalk Trail. Mere minutes from downtown Lincoln City, you can find yourself in the Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area and/or Devil’s Lake State Park. The recreation area is where you’ll find the campgrounds with access to the lake for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and waterskiing. You can also take a lovely, 10-minute walk along the boardwalk with nature and water on either side of you. Just remember to watch out for the wildlife sharing this space with you!

5. Drift Creek Falls Trail. If you’re looking for a somewhat longer trail once the parks reopen, the Drift Creek Falls Trail in Siuslaw National Forest might be an ideal option for you. This 2.6-mile walk can be completed in about an hour and 20 minutes at a fairly leisurely pace. Just make sure to slow down enough to enjoy the beauty of this national forest!

6. God’s Thumb (via The Knoll). More experienced hikers may prefer the God’s Thumb trail, which is also located in Siuslaw National Forest with parking at Roads End State Recreation Site. The 4.4-mile, out-and-back walk is considered moderate in difficulty due to a steep climb at the end, but many people do take their children, and dogs are allowed on leashes. It is important to be cautious on this trail, as slips and falls have occurred in the past.

7. Kirtsis Park Walk. This is a great trail if you’re looking for an easy, forest park walk that starts right at the edge of Lincoln City. The 1.6-mile, out-and-back walk takes you through a lush, green setting and is just long enough to feel like you’ve got a good bit of exercise in.

8. Spyglass Ridge Open Space. Another relatively easy but absolutely stunning walk near Lincoln City is the Spyglass Ridge Open Space. Most of the 1.3-mile trail takes you through a forested setting, but if you take your time and keep exploring, you will find yourself with a stunning view of the ocean. The walk can be completed in less than 45 minutes and dogs are allowed on leashes. Our beach house rentals will be waiting for you once all the parks and other facilities reopen. You can rest assured that you will find an exceedingly clean, sterile, cozy, and comfortable place to enjoy the Central Oregon Coast upon arrival. We look forward to welcoming you to our home-away-from-home in Lincoln City again soon!
